How to repair carpet damage by pets

Can you imagine a world without pets? Big ones, tiny ones, furry, feathering, scaly ones? Two legs, four legs, or no legs (don’t forget about fish!). Although pets can be kept in aquariums, cages, or stables, in most cases they’re free to roam around the house.

We’re talking about dogs and cats of course, although the occasional ferret or bunny may be freed on occasion. Even though we love the critters with all our life, they can occasionally get a little unruly. And smelly. And messy.

And those “features” can often be transferred to the carpet or furniture. A good vacuuming can take care of the fur. But what happens if Fido or Fluffy or whatever the traditional name of a ferret is decides to start tearing into the carpet or leave behind little presents?

Even the most trained animals can go a little haywire times. Depending on where the pet damage carpet is, no matter how small, it can be a glaring imperfection on otherwise perfect flooring. But there’s no need to rip up the whole carpet. Spot fixes are much cheaper, and faster than trying to replace the floor.

Carpet Repair instead of Replace

It’s bad enough when your pet is digging around the flowerbed, but that much worse when they do it inside. And although there are ways to train your pet to keep from shredding the carpeting, you still need to take care of the damage before it grows worse.

But don’t fret, most of the time a professional can replace small damaged areas using a remnant piece of carpet (if you have some around, or cut a small section out of the front inside corner of a closet or some other less visible area) and fill it in with a “patch”.

Making a hole in the carpet to fix another area seems a little crazy we know, but all carpets have different manufacturing dye lots, so the only way to get an exact match is to use the same carpet already installed in the home.

Trying to find the exact same type, color, or style of your carpet will be impossible. We do recommend taking a small piece of your carpet into a flooring store beforehand to find something similar which can be used to replace the less noticeable area where the patch will be taken from. TA-DA! All fixed.

Cleaning Up After Accidents

Even if we make it easy for man’s best friend, such as a doggy door or three or four walks a day, they may not always be able to hold it. Perhaps they’re getting older or are suffering from some kind of illness. Or worse yet: Changed their diet! Our pets bring us a lot of joy, but they will definitely let you know when they aren’t happy.

Although it’s rare for indoor cats to not use the litter box or outdoor cats to do their business “in the wild,” there are times your adorable cat will bring you a “present.” This can leave behind blood that needs to be cleaned up, too. We love our pets, but dang it, they can make quite a mess can’t they?

If you discover one of those messes soon enough, try to remove the spot with a rag and water first. Remember to dab the area with a rag and not scrub the area. Not only will that make the spot larger, but you’ll also be grinding the spot further into the carpet fibers.

If you need a little more strength, try using a natural cleaning solution (our Heaven’s Best spotter bottles work amazingly) and spray it directly on the problem area. Again, try to dab or lightly agitate but don’t scrub to spread the spot.

Something else to consider: If it’s fluid you need to clean up, consider that you’re only seeing the tip of the iceberg so to speak. If the spot is the size of a salad plate, the mess under the carpet is probably the size of a dinner plate. This is one of the few times we’d actually use a sub backing extraction process along with a professional-grade enzyme to clean down below the carpet backing and into the pad.

The key is to be able to localize the accident. If we’re cleaning the whole house, we will zero in on these pet accidents with extraction but then move on to more effective and healthy low-moisture cleaning for the rest of the home. Why flood your carpets if you don’t have to?

Steam Cleaning vs. Low-Moisture
In most instances, we wouldn’t recommend using one of those steam cleaners you can rent from supermarkets or big home improvement box stores. In fact, Heaven’s Best rarely uses traditional steam cleaners because of the amount of water they use – and leave behind.

You’re familiar with those national carpet cleaning brands driving around in the tanker trucks. They use up to 100 gallons of water to clean the average 1,000 square foot home. Our low-moisture process uses around three gallons. Those traditional cleaning processes leave more water behind that Heaven’s Best uses for a whole job!

If you have a pet stain on your carpet or a family member has ruined a part of the flooring, contact Heaven’s Best. In either case, we work quickly, efficiently, and professionally. We look forward to making your carpet look like new and you getting back to enjoying your home.
