If you’re able to see the accident as it happens, some quick action on your part can keep a stain from setting. Some messes are relatively easy to clean up (fresh muddy shoe prints), can be blotted away with water, and many carpets come with a protectant to prevent stains and odors.
Unfortunately, you’re not always going to be around to see the deed go down. If some spilled red wine goes unnoticed during a gathering or the furry family member left a surprise on the area rug in the middle of the night, acting fast is no longer an option. But there are still many steps you can take before calling in the professionals for these tough stains.
Initial steps to spot cleaning your carpet
For best results, it’s important to attack the stain as soon as you notice it. Some stains that have had a chance to dry may be more difficult, but following these easy steps may do the job. We recommend using just plain old water for removing stains at the start because some cleaners can just make the situation worse.
1. Always “blot” or compress (push down) the dry towel into the carpet. You don’t need to be super aggressive, either, you just want to be able to absorb anything that’s still wet. Scrubbing the mess will only spread it around and may even drive the stain further into the carpet.
2. If the spot remains, use a fairly damp towel (hot water) and agitate the spot. Yes, we said don’t spread it around, but using tiny circles will help knock loose, dried, or ground-in stains. If the spot is coming up onto the towel, repeat until nothing more comes up or the spot is gone.
3. If the spot still remains, spray down the cleaning solution and let it sit for a few minutes. Again, blot/compress the spot to absorb up as much cleaner as possible into the towel, followed by agitation gently to finish.

Advantages of low-moisture carpet spot cleaners
When cleaning any areas of carpet or rug, the key is to not make the situation any worse. That’s why we also say to use plain water when you blot or lightly agitate the stain. But even water can cause problems if too much is used.
That’s why Heaven’s Best uses low-moisture cleaning for almost all of our residential, commercial, and industrial cleaning jobs. Many of those “tanker” carpet cleaning companies can dump nearly 100 gallons of water in a single 1,000 square foot appointment. The Heaven’s Best solution uses around three gallons to cover the same space.
One hundred gallons is a LOT of water. On average, only 70-percent of that water makes it back onto the truck. So where does that leave the other 30 gallons? On your floor, leaving behind a musty smell and elongated drying times.
With Heaven’s Best low-moisture, powerful suction method, most carpets are dry enough to walk on after a single hour. When finished, we’re able to take the dirty water to a transfer station where it can be filtered and used again. Non-toxic chemicals, much less water, and environmentally safe disposal of the used water mean your home will look great, but you’ll also be helping the environment.
